FHSI Classic: Day Two

Spruce Creek 11

Montverde Academy 1

The Spruce Creek Hawks remain undefeated on the season after winning their game of the FHSI Classic, 11-1, over the Montverde Academy Eagles.

Montverde struck first in this one, leading the game off with a double from Justin Colon and an RBI single from Kenny Ecleston. It was all Hawks from there, however.

Parker Hazen drove in two in the bottom of the first to help Spruce Creek reclaim the lead. Then in the 3rd inning, a total of 14 batters came to plate, with eight of them coming around to score. The Hawks only recorded three hits in the inning; most of the damage came from walks. Six free passes were issued in the inning, and a total of ten were given out in the game.

Brennan Keil drove in Zach Veen with a double in the bottom of the 5th to give Spruce Creek the mercy rule win. Zach Bennett earned the win on the mound, tossing five innings while scattering five hits and allowing one run to score.

Royal Palm Beach 3

University 2

It took an extra inning, but the Royal Palm Beach Wildcats were able to walk off against the University Titans to secure their first win of the 2019 FHSI Classic.

A pitcher's duel between Christian Adams (RPB) and Ethan Spinner (UNI) kept the game scoreless through four innings. The Wildcats broke through in the fifth inning when Solomon Masters drove in Adams to give Royal Palm a 1-0 lead. It did not last however, as Univerity answered back immediately thanks to a sac fly off the bat of Brendan Whaley.

The game went to the eighth inning, and with the international tiebreaker rule in effect, each team started the inning with a runner on second base. University brought in one run in the eighth off a Colby Molle single. They would leave the bases loaded though, and that would prove to be costly. In the bottom of the 8th, Ivan Madera launched a ball over the left fielder's head to score Ryan Marrero and Jeremiah Thomas for the walk off win.

Adams was the player of the game. In his four innings on the mound, he allowed only one hit, no runs and struck out six. At the plate, he was 3-4 with a run scored.

Tampa Prep 6

Lake Mary Prep 4

Colby Welch led the Tampa Prep Terrapins to day two win over the Lake Mary Prep Griffins, 6-4, on Tuesday afternoon.

The junior righty tossed four scoreless frames for the Terps, allowing only two hits while striking out three. He left the game with a 5-0 lead after a big fourth inning from his teammates. Griffin Ravo had a two RBI single, Lucas Harman drove in one, and they also scored on an error and a wild pitch to make it 5-0.

The Griffins attempted a come back in the bottom of the 5th inning. Logan McClure and Frankie Delgado had back-to-back RBI singles to cut the lead to 5-2. Later in the inning, an error by the catcher allowed McClure to come around and make it a two-run ballgame.

Both teams added a run in the 7th inning to make the final score of 6-4.

Griffin Ravo had two hits and two RBI for the Terrapins. McClure scored twice and drove in one in a losing effort for the Griffins.
