North Florida Christian 10 Flagler Palm Coast 4 Box Score
The North Florida Christian Eagles won their second game of the 2018 FHSI on Wednesday morning by defeating the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs 10-4.
It was FPC that got the scoring started early on. With one out, Cameron Becker was hit by a pitch, and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Trevor Meaney then slapped a single through the right side to put runners on the corners. Charlie Alfano didn’t waste any time, singling on the next pitch to score Becker. Meaney would come around on a passed ball to make it 2-0. Finally, a throwing error an errant pickoff attempt plated Alfaro to make it 3-0.
The Eagles were able to strike back quickly, putting up four runs in the top of the second. Matthew Dickey started things off with a triple and would come around to score on an RBI groundout from Jacob Granger. A single and a wild pitch would put men on 2nd and 3rd for JD Jerry. The leadoff man would come with through, spraying a 1-2 pitch down the left field line that scored two runners. Jerry then stole second and was brought in by a Brandon Walker single to make it 4-3.
Things stayed that way until the fourth inning when the Eagles put up six more runs. Jacob Granger and JD Jerry each scored via error from the Bulldogs. A few batters later, dickey would come through in a big way with a double to right center, scoring three more runs. Two batters later, Trent Phillips drove home Dickey with a single, making the score 10-3. FPC would add one run in the sixth on an RBI from Alfano, but the scoring would stop at 10-4.
Brandon Walker picked up the win for North Florida Christian. The FSU commit gave up two hits and four walks over 5.2 innings. When he was dialed in however, the Bulldogs had trouble putting wood on the ball; Walker finished the game with ten strikeouts.
Dickey led the way on offense, going 2-3 with a double, triple, two runs, three RBI and a steal. JD Jerry was also solid from the leadoff spot, scoring twice and driving in three. Trevor Meaney scored twice for FPC, and Charlie Alfano drove in two as well for the Bulldogs.
The Eagles are now 2-0 on the week, while FPC falls to 0-2.
Tampa Prep 4 Deltona 3 Box Score
It was a wild one in the day’s final contest between the Deltona Wolves and the Tampa Prep Terrapins. A late inning rally helped the Terrapins pick up their first win of the FHSI, 4-3, over Deltona on Wednesday afternoon.
Deltona struck first in the first when Carlos Perez scored on a Luis Arciniega single. The Wolves would then add two in the fourth inning. With one out, a walk to Derek Oddo followed by a Jafed Negron single and error put men on second and third. Bryan Rodriguez scored Oddo with a single to make it 2-0. A sac fly from Perez then plated Negron to make it 3-0.
This seemed to be enough for Deltona starter Clayton Harris, who held the Terrapins hitless through six innings. Up until the seventh, only one runner had reached base, and that was via error. The seventh started off rough for Harris though, as he plunked the leadoff man Gilbert Marquis. The next batter, Ryan Savitt, then broke up the shutout and no-hitter with a triple to deep right, scoring Marquis. After a lineout, Lucas Harmon then joined in on the action with an RBI single that scored Savitt. Harmon stole second during the next at bat, and was brought in by a single from Nico Apostoleres. A pitching change didn’t matter, as the next hitter, Ben Mensch hit a fly ball to center that dropped in for a double, putting men on second and third. Tampa Prep then tried to execute a game-winning suicide squeeze, but failed to get the bunt down. Apostoleres was thrown out at third to put two outs on the board and a man on second. Brian Campagnano then played the role of hero, launching another pop fly high into the sky in center. The fielder lost the ball in the sun, allowing Alex Varner to score, giving Tampa Prep a 4-3 win.
Colby Welch earned the win by tossing two innings of perfect relief with three strikeouts. Harris ended the day with six strikeouts over 6.1 innings for Deltona. Jafed Negron was the only player on either team to record more than one hit on the day.
