FHSI Challenge Day 2

South Fork 7 Florida High 1 Box Score

The South Fork Bulldogs earned their first win of the 2018 FHSI with a 7-1 victory over Florida High on Tuesday morning.

Ryan Shuley got things started in the bottom of the first with a two-out rBI single that scored teammate Tim Kudlinski. Sam Mickels would then add two more to the total in the second when his line drive went to the wall in right for a triple. Marcus Mastellone and Andrew Mitchell, who had reached on an error and a walk, respectively, both scored on the play.

Jacob Travis made the Seminoles pay for their leadoff walk in the third. After reaching on four balls to start the inning, he stole second base and then moved to third on a passed ball. A grounder to short off the bat of Hunter Wentworth would bring in Travis and make the score 4-0.

Aaron Alexander scored the only run for Florida High in the top of the fifth inning thanks to a wild pitch. However the Seminoles would give the run right back in the bottom of the frame when a fielding error led to a run by Jacob Travis.

The scoring wrapped up in the sixth with back to back RBI from Sam Mickels and Tim Kudlinski.

Hunter Wentworth was great on the mound for South Fork, tossing five innings. He scattered five hits and allowed one run, while punching out eight hitters. Mickels was the star of the offense with two hits and three runs batted in. Argene Lynn was the top performer for Florida High with a pair of singles on the day.

South Fork is now 1-1 on the week, while Florida High is still searching for their first win at 0-2,

University 1 Christian Academy of Knoxville 0 Box Score

The UHS Titans and CAK Warriors squared off in a tremendous pitcher’s duel featuring Jesus Ruiz (University) and Hunter Loyd (CAK). In the end, it was the Titans who would outlast the Warriors by a score of 1-0.

For two innings, there wasn’t much to talk about offensively as the two starting pitchers dominated the lineups. In the top of the third, however, it looked like University would break through. With two outs, Ruiz singled, and was moved to third on a Jackson Roberts double. Will Quinones was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Loyd was able to stay cool and struck out Anthony Perez to escape the threat unscathed. In the bottom half of the third, CAK had runners on the corners, but were not able to score.

The score remained zeroes until the fifth when Ruiz started things off with another single. A walk to Roberts moved him to second. After Loyd induced outs on the next two hitters, it looked as though he might get out of another jam. Michael Sinopoli had other plans though, as he poked a single into right field to score Ruiz.

Ruiz was able to keep the dangerous Warriors in check, finishing with a seven-inning complete game shutout. He scattered five hits, walked one and struck out seven batters to earn the win. He was also 2-4 at the plate with the only scored of the game. Loyd was impressive as he took a tough loss. His final line read five innings, five hits, one run, one walk and six strikeouts.

The Titans are now 2-0 and will earn a place in the Championship game on Friday with a win on Thursday. CAK falls to 1-1 on the week.
