Deltona 4 Flagler Palm Coast 3 Box Score
The Deltona Wolves took home the first win of the 2018 FHSI, defeating the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs by a score of 4-3 on Monday morning.
Defensive miscues plagued both teams as only two of the seven runs scored in the game were earned.
Cameron Becker started things off with a double in the first inning. After reaching third on a passed ball, he was brought in on a sac fly from Carlos Nieves to make it 1-0 Bulldogs. They would add two more to that lead in the second when Jace Wilson and Becker hit back to back RBI singles.
The Wolves were able to tie things up in the bottom of the second thanks to two costly errors by FPC. Edgard Azucey reached on an error and would come around to score on a David Lopez double. An error during the next at bat allowed Ray Pereira and Lopez to score, knotting the game at three.
After Derek Oddo was hit by a pitch to start the 5th, he was moved to third after some nice baserunning on a sac bunt. A sac fly from Brian Rodriguez brought him home to make it 4-3, the game’s final score.
Despite the loss, Jace Wilson was terrific on the mound for Flagler. In five innings of work he allowed only one hit, one earned run, three walks and seven strikeouts. Jafed Negron took home the win for Deltona after firing 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball. David Lopez scored once and drove in another to lead the Wolves’ offense.
Christian Academy of Knoxville 17 Florida High 1 Box Score
The CAK Knights took advantage of sloppy pitching from Florida High and defeated the Seminoles by a score of 17-1 in five innings on Monday afternoon.
CAK set the tone in the top of the first with six runs scored on only three hits. They were walked six times in the inning, and also threw in RBI doubles from Hunter Loyd and Austin Jaslove for good measure. An error and a wild pitch would plate two more in the third, followed by another pair in the fourth. Pinch hitter Alex Brewer brought the fireworks in the top of the 5th with a grand slam, giving CAK a 17-1 lead.
Any sort of offense would have been enough for starting pitcher Jacob Tate. The senior lefty threw all five innings for the Knights, scattering four hits. He walked two batters, and racked up seven strikeouts on the afternoon.
North Florida Christian 10 Tampa Prep 1 Box Score
The North Florida Christian Eagles scored early and often, putting up ten runs in the first four innings of their victory over the Tampa Prep Terrapins on Monday evening.
Tampa Prep was actually the first team on the board courtesy of a Charlie Vari RBI single that scored Landon Schabes. The lead would not last, however, as the Eagles were able to scratch together four runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, a pair of singles and walk loaded the bases for Major Posey. One run would come in on a passed ball before Posey’s double cleared the rest of the bases. Trent Phillips would then single in another run, making the score 4-1.
JD Tease picked up an RBI single in the third inning to extend the lead. In the fourth, Matthew Dickey was able to come around on an error to make it 6-0. Tease would add another RBI single in the fourth, and also come around to score on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Matthew Dickey would launch a home run over the wall to make the final score of 10-1.
Posey was also effective on the mound for North Florida Christian, picking up the win. He lasted four innings while scattering four hits with one earned run and one walk. He also had four punchouts.
Tease and Dickey each made it on base safely three times apiece. Tease had two runs and two RBI while Dickey contributed three runs and two RBI. Vari was the bright spot for the Terrapins, picking up two hits and a run driven in.
University 3 South Fork 1 Box Score
The University Titans escaped Monday’s nightcap with a 3-1 win over the South Fork Bulldogs.
University got things moving in the first when Will Quinones’s single drove in Jesus Ruiz. The Titans added a second run in the second courtesy of a Jarrett Hart double that scored Jackson Seamens. Their final run came one inning later on an Ian Sanmoogan sacrifice fly. South Fork got on the board in the fifth thanks to a squeeze bunt off the bat of Logan Klember, but that would be it for scoring.
Ben Gaul was fanastic for University, turning in a line of six innings, six hits, one run, no walks and three strikeouts. Lex Candelario tossed a scoreless seventh to pick up a save.
Ryan Shuley and Hunter Wentworth each had a couple of hits to pace the Bulldogs.
