MVP
Michael Rothenberg
Pine Crest Panthers
The Pine Crest Panthers took home the FHSI Challenge trophy, and catcher Michael Rothenberg was a big reason why. Touted as a potential draft prospect, Rothenberg was a destroyer of baseballs throughout the week. The week started with two hits against Miami Palmetto, including a moonshot home run over the right field fence. Against Taravella, the switch-hiter went 2-2 with a double, two walks, a run, an RBI and a steal. He then reached base twice more against South Dade with a double, walk and run in Thursday’s matchup. His week wrapped in Friday’s championship game with his third double of the week, and another walk. Over the four games, he hit .600 with four walks, good for an OBP of .714. He had an extra base hit in every game, and a slugging percentage of 1.200. Rothenberg is headed to Duke University in the fall.

Jake Sheeder
Palmetto Panthers
While there were plenty of strong performances on the mound throughout the week, one player stood out above the rest for his gutty performance. On Thursday, Jake Sheeder of Miami Palmetto threw every pitch of the game for the Panthers, including the extra inning needed to settle the game. In his eight innings of work, he allowed only one hit to the Westfield Bulldogs … a single with one out in the seventh inning. In fact, the first 19 batters to step to the plate were put down in order (one batter reached via walk in the first … he was caught stealing). Sheeder also struck out seven batters during the game, which was one of the most masterful performances the FHSI has ever seen.
