Most Valuable Player
Nathan Skinner
Bolles
Playing four games in five days is tough for any high school team. It takes a tremendous effort from the players, both at the plate and on the mound. Having a player who can excel in both areas truly makes them valuable. That is why Nathan Skinner is our 2017 FHSI Classic MVP.
In the second game of the week for Bolles, Skinner was given the start on the mound. He turned in an absolute gem, going the distance and shutting out a powerful Olympia Titans offense. In his seven innings of work, he allowed zero runs on four hits and struck out four batters, helping the Titans win their pool and advance to the Championship bracket. At the plate, Skinner was a key component to the Bulldogs attack. In four games, he was 6-12 (.500 average) and had at least one hit in all four games. He scored one time, and also drove five runs, second most on the team.
Most Valuable Pitcher
Bret Neilan
Timber Creek
Bret Neilan opened up the 201 FHSI Classic with one of the strongest starts of the entire tournament. His Timber Creek Wolves were matched up against a tough opponent in the Highland Hawks. Neilan was up to the challenge though, tossing six innings while allowing a total of four batters to reach base on a walk, single, error and hit by pitch. In fact, he didn't allow a hit until the 5th inning, and no batter made it further than second base while he was pitching. The junior right hander kept the Hawks at bay with a nice mix of a fastball, changeup and a strong breaking pitch. Using this arsenal, he was able to strikeout a total of nine batters in his six innings of work.
