2021 Showcase: Day Two

Updated: Mar 24, 2021

Player of the Day: Andy Perez, University

Pitcher of the Day: Knute Rockey, Spruce Creek

SouthLake Christian: 6

University (Orange City): 7

The first game of the day didn't see a run scored until the top of the third inning when Derek Farley hit an RBI single right up the middle to give SouthLake Christian a 1-0 lead. They would carry that lead until the bottom of the fourth when Andy Perez hit a two run double over the head of the left fielder. They would add to the lead the following inning on an RBI single from Andrew Korkus, and then plated two more the following inning on an infield single from Bryce Swindle.

The Eagles would not go away quietly though in the seventh inning as their inning started off with walk-walk-single-HBP before Derek Farley hit a bases clearing double to tie the game up 5-5. They would add on another run in the top of the 8th when Nicholas Noto struck out on a dropped curveball and would attempt to advance to first base. On the throw over from the catcher, the first basemen lost the ball in the sun and dropped it while Jim Burnham kept running from second and scored.

The Titans would answer back in the bottom of the eighth when they would load the bases up before Andy Perez ended the game on a two run single to left for the 7-6 win!

University will wrap up Pool Play on Wednesday night at 7:00pm in Sanford against Rockledge. The winner of that game will be the top seed for Pool B entering Bracket Play on Thursday. SouthLake Christian's next game will be on Thursday afternoon at 2:00pm in Sanford. Their opponent is TBD.

Spruce Creek 7

Gainesville 0

Spruce Creek wasted no time getting on the board when Corey Robinson drilled an RBI double to left as the second batter of the game. He would later score on a sac fly from cleanup hitter Preston Wetherell. The Hawks would add another run in the second on a run scoring single from leadoff man Evan Mastro for the 3-0 lead. They wouldn't score again until the fifth inning when Wetherell hit a towering sac fly to the left field wall, scoring Robinson who had just stolen second and third base with ease. After a two run double from Dalton Hurst in the top of the seventh, Wetherell would end up hitting his third sac fly of the game for the seventh and final run of the game.

On the mound for the Hawks, Knute Rockey brought the heat from the get go. He threw six scoreless innings, striking out five and worked around three hits and two walks in the process. Sidearm pitcher Lucas Mahstedt would get the final three outs of the game for the Hawks.

Spruce Creek will play again on Wednesday at 4:30pm in Sanford against Key West. The winner will get the top seed in bracket play for Pool A. Gainesville's next game will be on Thursday afternoon at 2:00pm in Sanford against SouthLake Christian.
