FHSI Showcase All-Tournament Team

March 16, 2019

Co-Cy Young

Andrew Painter, So.

Calvary Christian

Painter showed why he was the top pro prospect in this week's tournament. The sophomore flame-thrower had his best stuff working on Tuesday against a tough Barron Collier offense. Using a mix of a mid 90s fast ball and a pro grade slider, Painter was able to limit the Cougars to three hits .. all singles ... in his start. He tallied five strikeouts and did not walk a batter. His effort was crucial as the Eagles only managed to score one run in the game. He recorded his complete game shutout on 84 pitches, and only faced one batter over the minimum.

Co-Cy Young

Mac Gortney, Sr.

Christ School

Gortney sent the Greenies home on a high note, tossing an absolute gem on Friday afternoon against University. He started off by retiring the first eight hitters he saw before allowing a double in the third. One other hitter reached base via single in the fourth, and then Gortney shut the Pioneer offense down, retiring the next 12 hitters in order. The big lefty featured a beautiful curveball that was only met with weak contact throughout the day. Over the course of 79 pitches, Gortney recorded five strikeouts and did not issue a walk.

Most Valuable Player

Matt Simon, Sr.

Orangewood Christian

Matt Simon was the spark behind the Orangewood Christian offense all week long, helping lead the Rams to the championship game on Friday night. He started his week with a 2-3 effort against Flagler Palm Coast, scoring once and driving in two. After a 1-3 effort against Second Baptist on Wednesday, Simon's big game came on Thursday against Christ School. The senior infielder reached base safely four times in the game. He had an RBI single in the fifth, an RBI hit by pitch in the sixth, and then drove in the game tying and game winning runs on a base hit to deep center in extra innings, sending Orangewood to the championship game. Simon added a double and a walk to his ledger in the Friday finale. On the week, he slashed .545/.643/.636 and led all players in both hits (6) and RBI (6).
